Dear fellow Aztecs,

Although it seems like just a short while ago, it has now been 50 years since I was president of Associated Students at San Diego State. How the campus has changed!

If you belong to the SDSU Alumni Association, you no doubt keep up with the progress. If you haven’t been on campus in recent years, I encourage you to attend this year’s homecoming festivities and see how the campus has evolved. You’ll be amazed.

Aztecs vs. Fighting Irish

Sign Up Now for the Alumni Association Viewing Party in Your Area
Even without a ticket to the game, you can scream for the team with other SDSU fans when the Aztecs take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish September 6 in South Bend, Indiana. The SDSU Alumni Association is sponsoring official game-day parties this Saturday at four locations specifically reserved for Aztec fans.

Special Long-sleeve Tee Observes Historic Meeting Between Schools
September 6 marks the first time San Diego State’s Aztecs will meet Notre Dame’s storied Fighting Irish on the football field. In observance of this historic occasion, a limited supply of special edition tee shirts is available to Aztec fans.

Survey Seeks Alumni Opinions for SDSU, CSU
More than 150,000 alumni of institutions in the California State University system have been sent surveys seeking their opinions on their schools, their alumni associations, and the CSU. Almost 17,000 were sent to SDSU alumni via email on August 27.

Concrete Footings and Rebar Outline New Alumni Center
From the elevation of the nearby Aztrack, it is easier to make out the shape of the new Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center. Rebar and concrete footings now mark a partial outline of the $11 million facility under construction at 55th Street and Hardy Avenue.

New Faculty Arrive on Campus
Not only will 7,300 new students hit campus, Sept. 2, but so will 45 new faculty members from places as far away as Italy, Switzerland and Australia.

Freshmen Class Brings High Marks to Campus
More than 7,500 new undergraduates began classes on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Coach Mark Warner to Retire
San Diego State volleyball coach Mark Warner has announced that he will step down as head coach of the Aztec Women's volleyball program at the conclusion of the 2008 season. Warner's connection with SDSU volleyball - both men's and women's teams -stretches back 27 years.

SDSU Adds Pair to Men's Basketball Program
San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher announced Tuesday the addition of Brian Carlwell and Bryce Smith to the Aztec men's basketball program. Carlwell comes to Montezuma Mesa after spending the last two seasons at the University of Illinois. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2009-10. Smith, meanwhile, is a freshman shooting guard who will be eligible to play immediately.

SDSU Women's Soccer Defeats Arizona State, 2-1, in Home Opener
In its home opener, the San Diego State women's soccer team picked up its second consecutive victory, defeating Arizona State, 2-1. Freshman forward Taylor Canatsey scored the game-winner, while sophomore midfielder Cat Walker posted a goal and an assist as the Aztecs' improved to 2-1-0 on the season.

SDSU, City of San Diego Join Forces to Host ‘Pathways to Green Sustainability and Strategies for Success’
San Diegans can learn more about "going green" at an upcoming seminar co-sponsored by the City of San Diego and San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies. Learning how to reduce our carbon footprint, implement sustainable strategies for energy and construction, and create a greener future will be discussed at "Pathways to Green Sustainability and Strategies for Success" on Friday, Sept. 5 from 8-10:30 a.m. at SDSU’s Extended Studies Center.

SDSU Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming Welcomes New Chair
San Diego State University’s Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming has welcomed a new chair to the program, Katherine Spilde Contreras.
