The Montys 2006 The Montys honors those who have made significant contributions to San Diego State University, the San Diego community or California, nationally or internationally. The awardees for 2006 are: College of Arts & Letters Clare Crane ('58, history) helps build the future with a strong foundation in the past. She has taught history at several San Diego colleges and universities, including SDSU, publishing numerous historical works surrounding the history of San Diego. Her philanthropy and community outreach efforts have resulted in improved test scores for students in schools throughout San Diego County. College of Business Administration Art Flaming (‘60, marketing) is the owner and president of The Tierra Corporation, a successful property development and management company. He is a philanthropist and community volunteer serving on several councils and boards of directors including the SDSU Alumni Association, of which he is a past president. All three of Flaming's children are also SDSU alumni. College of Education Rhonda Welch-Scalco ('94, special education) is among the youngest people ever elected tribal chairperson of the Barona Band of Mission Indians. A leader and an advocate for families both on the reservation and in other areas of San Diego , she connects individuals and families with services they need. Welch-Scalco has collaborated on initiatives involving the growth and development of Native American children. College of Engineering Douglas Fronius ('75, music; '85 aeronautical engineering) directs the the Fire Scout Program as Deputy Director of Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Northrup-Grumman. Considered a leader in aviation's newest and most innovative field (UAV development), he is also a teacher, accomplished musician and pilot who restores and flies vintage planes. College of Health and Human Services Sheila Lipinsky ('72, communicative disorders) is a pioneer in the education of children with special needs. Her innovative model for integrating deaf and hard of hearing children into regular classrooms resulted in the start of the Itinerate Program in Chula Vista City Schools and was a precursor for similar initiatives throughout San Diego County. Cultural and philanthropic organizations of all varieties have also been the beneficiaries of her tireless work. College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Jack Williams ('72, speech communication) recently retired as President and COO of Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises to pursue his philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. His work has benefited such organizations as the Homeland Security Advisory Council, the Andre Agassi Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, from which he received the CFF's highest honor, the “Breath of Life” Award. College of Sciences Tim Day ('85, '87, physics) is Board Chairman, CEO and CTO of Daylight Solutions Inc., a company focused on Medical Diagnostics and Homeland Security applications of Mid Infrared lasers. He is an award-winning and widely-published innovator in the areas of science, technology and industry. Instrumental in introducing tunable lasers into the telecommunications market, Day is a leader in a field in which the latest discoveries in physics are translated rapidly into new and powerful technologies. Library and Information Access Gregory Bear ('73, English) is an internationally recognized science fiction writer, illustrator, and freelance journalist who has published more than 35 novels. His work has been translated into at least 17 languages with his expertise and interest in science resulting in appointments to several boards and think tanks including the National Citizens Advisory Council on Space Policy. Distinguished Alumni Service Award Ron and Alexis ('93, accounting/accountancy) Fowler are San Diego civic leaders known for their philanthropy and support for education at all levels, including numerous programs and initiatives at SDSU. She is a former lecturer at SDSU. He is the founder of the Entrepreneurial Management Center and the first chairman of The Campanile Foundation. Distinguished University Service Award Stephen and Susan Weber have provided a decade of leadership and inspiration at SDSU. As the university's seventh president, he stewards resources and further develops global programs for a school recognized for its rising academic quality, increasing alumni involvement and growing private financial support.
