Inspired by her passion for surfing, SDSU alumna Maricruz Carrillo (‘15, ‘18, ‘23) transformed an idea into SUNMUD, a growing brand dedicated to helping people enjoy the outdoors while protecting their skin.

From her journey to San Diego State University to launching her own skincare brand, triple alumna Maricruz Carrillo’s (‘15, ‘18, ‘23) story is one of creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurship.

Inspired by a passion for surfing and sun protection, she transformed an idea into SUNMUD, a growing brand dedicated to helping people enjoy the outdoors while protecting their skin. Named after the mud that elephants use to protect their dry skin, Maricruz has been leaning on the knowledge, skills, and support she gained at SDSU, including resources like ZIP Launchpad, to turn her vision into reality.

As a founder, Maricruz has navigated the challenges of building a business from the ground up, developing products, forging meaningful partnerships, and growing brand awareness through community engagement and social media. Her work has led to exciting collaborations, including the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, helping SUNMUD expand its impact beyond skincare.

Today, Maricruz continues to grow SUNMUD while inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs. Through her experiences, she encourages students and alumni to pursue their ideas with confidence, embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, and take advantage of the resources and connections available to them.

With ambitious goals for the future, she remains focused on innovation, growth, and making sun protection more accessible for outdoor enthusiasts every day.
