From discovering sailing at a young age to helping shape the future of the San Diego State University Sailing Team, alumnus Erik Hallback (‘21) credits SDSU for giving him the foundation for lifelong friendships, professional success, and a commitment to giving back.

After being introduced to sailing at a young age, Erik Hallback (‘21) knew that when it came time to apply to colleges, he wanted to attend one where he could continue his craft. Immediately falling in love with everything San Diego State University had to offer, Erik set his sights on becoming an Aztec.
While a student at SDSU, Erik studied political science and joined the SDSU Sailing Team, a recognized student organization where beginner and advanced sailors can join, compete, and be a part of a co-ed team on campus.
As the current Junior Sailing Director at the San Diego Yacht Club, Erik not only works to put on camps for kids and help the club’s initiatives, but he also remains a key part of helping SDSU sailors succeed.
The partnership between the San Diego Yacht Club and the SDSU Sailing Team provides student-athletes with access to world-class facilities and a fleet of 20 high-quality boats for practices and competitions. This unique relationship allows Aztec sailors to train at a high level while benefiting from the guidance and support of alumni who remain deeply invested in the program's success.
From organizing practices and coordinating travel to managing finances and recruiting new members, students are responsible for leading nearly every aspect of the SDSU Sailing Team. The hands-on experience not only builds competitive sailors but also develops leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills that extend far beyond graduation.
As a student-led organization, the team's success depends on the dedication of its members and the generosity of alumni and supporters of SDSU. The SDSU Sailing Team fund helps provide reliable funding for essential resources such as boats, equipment, regatta travel, coaching, and other program needs.
By supporting the fund, donors are helping ensure future generations of Aztec sailors have access to meaningful opportunities while preserving the strong community and traditions that have defined the SDSU Sailing Team for decades.
