Paying It Forward for Future Educators: Dennis (‘75) and Elaine Szeto
Longtime SDSU supporters Dennis and Elaine Szeto are inspiring the Aztec community to invest in the future of education.
Since opening its doors in 1897, San Diego State University has been committed to preparing exceptional educators. Longtime supporters Dennis Szeto (’75) and Elaine G. Szeto are carrying that legacy forward through a $250,000 matching gift challenge supporting current and future educators at SDSU.
Dennis’ own educational journey helped shape the couple’s commitment to teachers. After immigrating from Hong Kong as a young boy, he struggled with English and initially avoided speaking in class. A teacher who encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone helped build his confidence, a lasting experience that reinforced the powerful influence educators can have on students’ lives.
Building on their previous support for SDSU, including an endowed professorship in finance and a scholarship for teaching credential students, the Szetos launched Teach Forward: A Matching Gift Challenge to help students pursuing teaching credentials and master’s degrees.
Through the challenge, eligible gifts will be matched dollar for dollar, helping donors double their impact and potentially generate approximately $20,000 in annual scholarship support for future teachers if fully subscribed.
