Meet this year's Aztec Proud Scholars

Published on May 6, 2026

Meet the inspiring students behind the Aztec Proud Scholarship and discover how this support is shaping their journeys at San Diego State University.

Aztec Proud was established in 2014 as a peer-to-peer student philanthropy program. Each year, incoming students support the Aztec Proud Legacy Scholarship in honor of their class year with donations of just $10, beginning a sustainable promise of scholarships and resources for generations to come.

Reina Hastings, a graduate student in Bio and Medical Informatics and soon-to-be double Aztec (‘24), has immersed herself in the sciences through extensive research, academic involvement, and campus leadership.

Tyana Ortiz, a graduate student in Geography and also a soon-to-be double Aztec (‘24), is deeply engaged as a lab intern, student worker, and Associated Students volunteer, with a focus on sustainability and community impact.

Mollie Schnee, a graduate student in Education Counseling and proud double Aztec (‘23), continues to give back as an SDSU Admissions Counselor after an incredibly involved undergraduate experience that included serving as an ambassador, participating in Greek Life, and navigating campus as an out-of-state student.

The Aztec Proud Scholarship provides more than financial support, it empowers students like Reina, Tyana, and Mollie to fully invest in their education and passions. With this support, they are able to pursue meaningful research, engage in hands-on experiences, and support others in their own journeys. Each of these scholars exemplifies the spirit of SDSU through their leadership, dedication, and commitment to making a difference, strengthening the Aztec community now and for years to come.
