SDSU Scholar Fueled by Alumni, Driven to Give Back

Published on December 5, 2025

San Diego State University senior and computer engineering major, Daniel Self, was honored to be awarded one of this year’s SDSU Alumni Scholarships.

Drawn to SDSU for its reputable engineering program and opportunities for entrepreneurship, Daniel knew SDSU could be a place where he could thrive. Now, as a senior, Daniel has taken full advantage of the resources SDSU has to offer, including participating as a founder in the ZIP Launchpad Startup Incubator.

Having experienced homelessness himself, Daniel became passionate about addressing food insecurity among students. To help support his peers and with the support of the ZIP Launchpad, he founded “Second Course,” a program that connects students with available meals from campus events and organizations.

With over 400 students and 15 organizations signed up for the pilot program, Daniel hopes that once the “Second Course” app is created, they can continue to help even more people.

Receiving the SDSU Alumni Scholarship means a lot to the San Diego native. As someone who has faced many obstacles, Daniel says that this scholarship not only validates all of his hard work but also shows him that he has a network of over half a million alumni who want to see him succeed.

Because of generous alumni and supporters, SDSU Alumni Scholarships are able to help students like Daniel put their best foot forward academically, but also step confidently into their careers beyond graduation.
