Side by Side Through Every Aztec Season

While some may not believe in fate and superstitions, it is clear that Josh (‘96) and Maria (‘17) are each other’s lucky charms.

After meeting over 20 years ago by working on the same floor together, Josh and Maria have been together ever since. One of the first trips they ever took together was to the NCAA basketball tournament in Chicago in 2002, setting the tone for a relationship rooted in shared experiences, travel, and a deep love for Aztec basketball.

Cheering side by side through every season has been a constant in their relationship. From the unforgettable National Championship run to regular season games, Aztec basketball has provided some of their favorite memories together and remains a meaningful part of their lives every year. The pair even has a few superstitions of their own, including a special handshake and lucky tennis shoes.

Grateful for the role SDSU has played in shaping both of their lives, the Mellingers remain deeply connected to the Aztec community. Josh, who graduated with a degree in journalism, currently works in talent acquisition, while Maria, who received her MA in education, is a dedicated teacher.

Through their careers, they share a common passion for mentoring and supporting others, values that reflect the spirit of the Aztec family they proudly remain a part of.

United by their love for each other and their unwavering support of SDSU basketball, Josh and Maria continue to cheer on the Aztecs together, proving that some of the strongest bonds are built season by season.
